CAO 2026 & 2027

New CAO Courses for 2026 and 2027 Entry

New CAO courses are the hardest ones to judge, because nobody has graduated from them yet and most have no points history. This guide lists every Level 6, 7 and 8 course that was new for 2026 entry or is flagged NEW in the CAO Handbook 2027, explains what sets each one apart, and shows what the Irish job market holds for each sector when these students graduate.

What counts as a new CAO course on this page

We list every Level 6, 7 and 8 course that first appeared in the CAO Handbook 2026 (first students started in September 2026, so each has one year of Round 1 points) and every course the CAO Handbook 2027, published in September 2026, flags as NEW for September 2027 entry. The CAO marks a course NEW the first time it appears in the handbook; that is not a guarantee it will run, and colleges can still add or withdraw courses before 1 February, so always check the Important Changes table. A few rows carry a small verify flag where a detail such as duration or the final title was not confirmed on the college site when we checked. Use the Show buttons above to filter by year; links on CAO codes open the MyCareerVerse course page.

Tech, AI & Data

7 new for 2026 · 8 new for 2027

Strong long-run demand, but a squeeze at the entry level right now

Tech is still the sector with the deepest structural demand in Ireland: ICT employment grew 42% between 2019 and 2024 and software developers and IT engineers remain on the SOLAS shortage list, with particular demand for AI and cybersecurity skills. The flip side is that 2025 and 2026 brought a sharp correction for graduates. Almost half of Irish employers cut entry-level roles in 2026 and employment of under-30s in the most AI-exposed ICT jobs fell by roughly a fifth between 2023 and 2025. Demand is rotating towards AI and machine-learning engineering, data engineering, cloud, cybersecurity and roles that apply computing to another field, which is exactly where most of the new courses below sit.

Graduate software engineer roughly €33,000 to €35,000 to start (Payscale, 2026), rising to €40,000 to €50,000 within three years (Morgan McKinley Salary Guide 2026). DevOps and cloud roles sit at the top of that band.

Watch out for

Generic junior developer, QA and support roles are the most exposed to AI tools, and Irish headcount depends heavily on decisions made in US head offices (Meta, TikTok, Amazon and Accenture all cut Irish roles in 2026). A specialism, a placement and a portfolio of real projects matter more than ever.

Roles in demand
AI / machine-learning engineerData engineerCloud, DevOps and site-reliability engineerCybersecurity analyst and incident responderDigital forensics specialistHealth informatics and clinical systems analystAI governance and compliance specialist
The honest take

Cyber, forensics, AI engineering, health informatics and sports technology are specialisms employers are actively short of. A plain computing degree with no placement is a harder sell than it was in 2022.

Health & Life Sciences

7 new for 2026 · 3 new for 2027

The most dependable demand of any sector through 2032

An ageing population, a national health-workforce paper warning that Ireland will not have enough health and social care workers on current trends, and chronic therapy and psychology vacancies make this the safest bet for graduate employment. The biopharma and medtech industries add another 100,000 jobs on top of the HSE, with an identified shortfall of about 3,000 graduates. Two new vet schools, a sixth medical school, a sixth pharmacy school and a fourth speech and language therapy degree all opened in 2026 for exactly this reason. Nurses, midwives, radiographers, doctors and most allied-health roles are on the Critical Skills Occupations List.

Staff nurse point 1 is €38,166 from June 2026 on a 13-point scale to €56,592 (HSE pay scale). Quality-control and QA analysts in biopharma start at roughly €30,000 to €40,000 (HERO Life Sciences Salary Guide 2026). Allied-health staff grades follow HSE consolidated scales; verify the current point on hse.ie.

Watch out for

HSE recruitment controls can leave funded posts unfilled even when demand is obvious, newly qualified nurses continue to emigrate, and the US tariff threat hangs over pharma exports. Psychology has a bottleneck at funded doctoral places. New programmes in regulated professions (vet, pharmacy, SLT) must complete accreditation; check the regulator before relying on them.

The honest take

If a new course in this sector is accredited (or on track to be) by CORU, the PSI, the Veterinary Council or the Medical Council, the job market is about as secure as it gets for a school-leaver.

A firm policy pipeline to 2030 and a documented shortage of engineers

The 300,000-homes-by-2030 plan, the National Development Plan and grid, water and transport investment give engineering and construction the firmest medium-term demand of any sector. Engineers Ireland and the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland both document multi-thousand annual shortfalls, and civil, structural, electrical and mechanical engineers, quantity surveyors and construction planners are all on the Critical Skills Occupations List. Aviation maintenance is a regional specialism around Shannon with its own licensing system (EASA) and steady demand from leasing and maintenance firms.

Graduate engineer about €39,000 in the first one to two years, median €49,000 at three to five years and €73,000 at eleven to fifteen years (Engineers Ireland Salary Report 2026). Early-career quantity surveyor roughly €38,700 (Payscale, 2026, indicative).

Watch out for

Construction is cyclical and sensitive to interest rates and development finance. Completions dipped in Q2 2026 and analysts warn the housing target may be back-loaded. Irish engineers continue to emigrate to Australia and Canada, which keeps demand high but is a sign of pressure on pay and housing at home.

Sustainability, Climate & Environment

A growth niche that rewards pairing sustainability with a hard discipline

Offshore wind (5GW by 2030, 37GW by 2050), half a million home retrofits, grid expansion and EU reporting rules are creating real jobs, but most of them are engineering, trades, planning, science and finance roles with a green application rather than a separate green profession. Environmental scientists, planners and consenting specialists are in short supply for wind and infrastructure projects. Sustainable tourism sits in a sector that supports over 250,000 jobs and cannot fill supervisory roles. Students should treat sustainability degrees as a lens on a discipline, not a substitute for one.

No dedicated graduate survey exists for green roles. Environmental science and consultancy graduates typically track general science pay of roughly €30,000 to €38,000 (indicative), while engineering graduates working on wind or grid projects start near €39,000 (Engineers Ireland 2026). Tourism-management graduates historically start lower, around €27,000 to €34,000 (indicative).

Watch out for

Offshore wind projects have slipped on planning and grid connection, so job creation is running behind the headlines. ESG reporting roles are affected by the EU simplifying its sustainability-reporting rules. Hospitality pay remains the lowest of any graduate sector.

Business, Finance, Law & Hospitality

8 new for 2026 · 3 new for 2027

A deep market, but the most crowded one, with AI eating junior transactional work

Business, administration and law is the largest graduate field in Ireland (about one in four graduates). The Ireland for Finance strategy launched in August 2026 targets further growth in international financial services, international banks are hiring, and the Law Society reported its biggest trainee intake in 17 years. The catch is that junior bookkeeping, audit testing, KYC and paralegal work is exactly what AI tools automate first, so growth is in regulation, risk, compliance, data and the business-plus-technology hybrids several of these new courses offer. Hospitality and luxury management are chronically short of supervisors and managers but pay less.

Trainee accountant €28,000 to €38,000, Big Four at the top with exam fees paid (indicative, 2026). Trainee solicitor averages about €29,000 nationally with large Dublin firms paying considerably more (Payscale 2026, indicative). Hospitality graduate trainees typically €28,000 to €34,000 (indicative).

Watch out for

Almost half of employers cut graduate roles in 2026, and the Department of Finance notes finance grew only about 4% between 2023 and 2025 compared with 6% or more in sectors less exposed to AI. A general business degree without a specialism or placement faces the toughest competition of any field.

Policy-backed and growing, but small, project-based and portfolio-driven

Budget 2026 brought a 40% VFX relief and an enhanced digital-games tax credit, Screen Ireland described production activity in the first half of 2026 as exceptionally strong, and games riggers were added to the Critical Skills Occupations List in May 2026. The live-events industry has struggled to recruit technical crew since 2022. Against that, the whole audiovisual sector is around 16,000 full-time-equivalent jobs, work is project-based, and studios say graduates often lack job-ready software skills. Generative AI is already reducing junior illustration, editing and motion-design work.

No reliable 2026 graduate survey exists for creative roles. Older data put media and creative graduates among the lowest paid at roughly €26,000 to €30,000, while UX and product-design roles in tech companies track tech pay at about €35,000 to €45,000 (both indicative).

Watch out for

Education, Psychology & Social Care

The highest graduate employment rate of any field, with post-primary shortages to the mid-2030s

Education graduates had the highest employment rate of any field nine months after graduating (91.6%, HEA Class of 2024). Schools reported almost 1,000 long-term vacancies in primary and special education in 2026 and acute post-primary gaps in Maths, Irish, Home Economics, Construction Studies, the sciences and Art, which is why MIC, DkIT and DCU have all launched new teaching pairings in those subjects. One caution: primary enrolments are falling fast, so primary demand softens from about 2028 while post-primary stays under-supplied until the mid-2030s. Social care, early years and psychology all have strong demand but weaker pay and tight progression routes.

Newly qualified teacher point 1 is €47,417 from June 2026 on the common basic scale (ASTI/TUI), rising to €86,265. Early-years graduate lead educator €17.50 an hour under the 2025 Employment Regulation Order (about €34,000 full-time). Social care workers and social workers follow HSE and Tusla grade scales; check the current point.

Watch out for

A concurrent BEd qualifies you for the subjects named on the Teaching Council register, so check that every new pairing is Teaching Council accredited before relying on it. Non-teaching degrees such as Home Economics or Music and Maths need a PME afterwards (two more years). Psychology has a bottleneck at funded clinical training places.

The honest take

Shortage-subject teaching combinations are the surest route to a permanent post in this sector. Psychology and social-care degrees are in demand but check CORU and PSI accreditation.

Shortages in labs and on farms, but many science careers need a Master's

Analytical, process and medical scientists and laboratory technicians are on the SOLAS shortage list, and the biopharma industry expects to recruit about 5,600 people a year to 2027. Agri-food employs around 169,000 people, half of agri employers say roles are hard to fill, and agronomists were added to the Critical Skills Occupations List in May 2026. Forestry and horticulture are small fields with policy tailwinds from the Climate Action Plan and a shortage of qualified foresters. Veterinary medicine is the standout high-demand, high-barrier route, with a large-animal vet shortage severe enough that the State opened two new vet schools in 2026. Almost one in five natural-science graduates goes straight into further study.

Indicative starting pay

QC and analytical scientists start at roughly €30,000 to €40,000 (HERO Life Sciences 2026), rising to €42,000 to €55,000 in Dublin biopharma (Morgan McKinley 2026). Veterinary nurses average €36,800 (IVNA 2026). Agri-business and food-science graduates typically €30,000 to €38,000 (indicative).

Watch out for

Entry roles are often technician-level and shift-based with modest pay, routine lab testing is being automated, and the PhD route into academic research has poor permanent prospects. Primary farm employment is falling even as agri-business grows.

The Irish Job Market in 2026

Record employment, low unemployment and a graduate class that is mostly in work within nine months. The one real change since 2023 is that employers are hiring fewer graduates into generic entry-level roles, which is why specialist and applied degrees are gaining ground.

The entry-level squeeze, and what it means for choosing a course

Almost half of Irish employers (47%) cut entry or graduate-level roles in 2026, citing labour costs and AI adoption (IrishJobs survey, May 2026). The Department of Finance found that employment of 15 to 29-year-olds in the most AI-exposed ICT roles fell about 20% between 2023 and 2025 while older workers in the same roles grew, and that about 63% of Irish jobs are relatively exposed to AI, with the adjustment happening mainly through hiring rather than lay-offs (February 2026). Over 80,000 people aged 15 to 34 were unemployed in Q2 2026. The pattern across the new courses on this page is a response to that: colleges are launching applied, hybrid and regulated-profession degrees (health, teaching, engineering, cyber, AI engineering, law with cyber) rather than more general computing, business or arts codes. Placements, professional accreditation and a specialism are the three things that most reliably get a graduate past the first filter.

Occupations the State cannot fill: the Critical Skills Occupations List, 2026

The Critical Skills Occupations List is the Government's register of roles it allows employers to recruit from outside the EEA because Irish supply is short. Updated in May 2026, it still includes software developers and IT and cyber specialists; civil, structural, electrical, electronic and mechanical engineers; quantity surveyors; doctors, registered nurses and midwives, radiographers and several allied-health roles; and certain finance and accounting roles. The May 2026 update added optometrists, intellectual-property professionals, geospatial and land surveyors, games riggers, agronomists and construction planners, and removed pharmaceutical technicians, dental technicians and forestry workers from the ineligible list. The minimum salary for a Critical Skills permit is €40,904 for a degree-holder from March 2026, a useful floor for what these roles pay.

Tech and engineering

Software, cyber, data, all core engineering disciplines, surveying, construction planning. New in 2026: geospatial surveyors and games riggers.

Health and land

Doctors, nurses, midwives, radiographers, allied health, optometrists. Agronomists added in 2026; forestry workers now eligible for general permits.

Business and law

Certain accounting, finance and compliance roles; intellectual-property professionals added in 2026.

Labour-market figures are from the CSO, HEA, SOLAS National Skills Bulletin 2025, Engineers Ireland, SCSI, Cyber Ireland, EGFSN, INTO/ASTI, the Law Society and named recruiter salary guides, as cited beside each figure. The SOLAS National Skills Bulletin 2026 had not been published when this page was compiled (October 2026). Salary figures are indicative and vary by employer, location and experience.

CAO 2027 Dates That Matter for New Courses

New courses are more likely than established ones to be restricted, to change or to be withdrawn, so the early deadlines matter more.

NowOctober 2026

Results and Round 1August 2027

Round Zero in early August, then Round 1 in the week after Leaving Cert results (2026 precedent: results 21 August, offers 26 August). New courses get their first-ever points this day.

Other 2027 changes worth knowing

Medicine: from 2027 Leaving Cert points above 550 are no longer moderated (full points to 625) and HPAT is capped at 150, so the combined maximum falls from 865 to 775. Leaving Cert 2027: nine redeveloped subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Business, Climate Action and Sustainable Development, Drama, Film and Theatre Studies, Ancient Greek, Arabic, Latin) are examined on new specifications for the first time, each with an additional assessment component worth at least 40%. The post-marking grade adjustment is reduced in 2027 and due to end by 2028. HEAR/DARE: eligibility can be carried forward only once and documents must be posted, not uploaded. Places: 612 extra healthcare places are funded for the 2027 round across nursing, pharmacy, veterinary, medicine and dentistry.

How to Judge a Course Nobody Has Graduated From Yet

There are no points to go on, so borrow them

A course new for 2027 has no cut-off, and a 2026 course has exactly one year of data, often from a small first cohort. Look at the nearest existing course in the same college (for example US847 for US846, or DC015 for DC019) and at points for similar courses nationally. Expect new courses to settle over two or three years.

Check accreditation before you rely on it

Regulated professions need the regulator, not just the college, to approve the course: CORU for speech and language therapy and social care, the PSI for pharmacy, the Veterinary Council for vet medicine, the Medical Council for medicine, the Teaching Council for teaching pairings and the PSI (Psychological Society) for psychology. New programmes are often approved in stages. Ask the college exactly where it stands.

Restricted means 1 February, no exceptions

Several new courses are restricted: DL861 Film (portfolio and interview), DK869 Musical Theatre (audition), GY263 Luxury Management (interview). They must be on your form by 1 February, or added through the €10 amend facility by 1 March. Change of Mind cannot add them.

NEW in the handbook does not mean guaranteed to run

The CAO marks a course NEW the first time it appears in the handbook. A handful are withdrawn each year before offers (AU693 was pulled for 2027). Check the Important Changes table on cao.ie before 1 February and again before Change of Mind closes, and always keep a well-established course on your list as insurance.

Remember

A new course is neither better nor worse for being new. Its advantages are real: a curriculum written for the job market of the 2030s, small first cohorts, lecturers who chose to build it, and often lower points in year one. Its risks are real too: no graduates to ask, accreditation that may still be in progress, and the small chance it does not run. Weigh it the same way you would any course, on what you will actually study, where the placement is, who accredits it and what its graduates will be qualified to do. Then keep an established course on the list beside it.

Useful Resources

Course details compiled October 2026 from the CAO Handbooks 2026 and 2027, CAO college alert lists and the colleges' own course pages. Course counts: 39 codes new for 2026 entry and 28 flagged NEW for 2027 across 16 institutions. Three Level 8 rows from the 2027 handbook could not be identified at the time of writing and will be added when confirmed.
