Study in Germany • For Irish students

Study in Germany

Courses in Germany that accept Irish school leavers. English-taught options. Low or zero tuition.

Why Germany?
  • Most public universities: ~€0 tuition for EU students.
  • Strong in Engineering, CS, Sustainability, Bio.
  • Degrees recognised across the EU.
  • Many Bachelor programmes fully in English.
Step 1

Do my Irish qualifications meet German entry requirements?

German universities ask whether your Leaving Cert is equivalent to the German Abitur. Generally: 6 subjects, including required subjects (e.g. Maths / Physics for Engineering).

You will usually need:
  • Leaving Cert (6 subjects)
  • Higher Level Maths for STEM
  • Official Statement of Results
Your grades

Leaving Cert → German system

Approximate mapping (indicative, competitive courses may demand higher):

Leaving Cert Result German Grade ≈ Comment
H1 / O1 1.0 – 1.3 Excellent / very competitive
H2 1.7 – 2.0 Strong for STEM / Business
H3 2.3 – 2.7 Often acceptable for applied sciences (FH)
H4 / O2 3.0+ May limit high-demand courses

Medicine, Dentistry, Psychology are much stricter.

What you must submit

Core documents

  • Leaving Cert results (official)
  • CAO Statement of Results / school reference
  • Passport (proves EU citizenship for fees)
  • Proof of English (LC English H4 or better is often accepted)
Extra for STEM

Higher Level Maths and/or Physics is often explicitly required for Engineering / Computer Science.

Check if I qualify

This checker will classify you as: University, Fachhochschule (Applied Sciences), or Foundation Year required.

Step 2

English-taught courses in Germany (for Irish students)

Filter by university, city, course name, or keyword (e.g. “automotive”, “biology”, “finance”).

Tip
“Fachhochschule” = University of Applied Sciences. Very practical. Strong industry links. Ideal for Engineering / Business / CS.

“Apply / Info” goes to the official programme page or main portal (Uni-Assist / direct application).

Step 3

Key deadlines & timeline

Germany has two main intakes: Winter semester (starts October) and Summer semester (starts April). Most English-taught Bachelor programmes start in October.

Typical cut-offs
Winter start (Oct): close mid-July.
Summer start (Apr): close mid-Jan.
Medicine / Dentistry: much earlier and extremely competitive.

Each university sets its own deadline. Late or incomplete = usually rejected automatically.

Shortlist programmes. Confirm entry requirements, language of instruction, and the application portal (Uni-Assist vs direct).

Certified copies of Leaving Cert results, predicted grades if still in 6th year, passport scan, CV, motivation letter. Check if sworn translation is needed.

Submit via Uni-Assist or directly. Pay the small processing fee. Monitor email daily: universities will ask for corrections and missing pages.

Apply early for dorms: German cities fill fast. Book travel. On arrival you must register your address (Anmeldung), usually within 14 days.

Orientation week, student ID, transport card, open bank account if needed, confirm health insurance.

Your next step

Generate a personalised checklist based on your Leaving Cert subjects, predicted grades, and target German course.
