Why This Matters

Multiple Routes Into Every Career

A university degree is one route — but it is far from the only one. Ireland now offers over 70 apprenticeship programmes across technology, engineering, finance, and healthcare. PLC courses at QQI Level 5 and 6 provide affordable, one-year pathways into CAO degrees through the Higher Education Links Scheme. And EU citizens can study across Europe, often with reduced or zero tuition fees. This page maps over twenty emerging careers to all three pathway types, so you can find the route that fits your circumstances, your learning style, and your ambitions.

Common Questions

Navigating Future Careers

An apprenticeship is a structured, paid programme where you work for an employer and attend off-the-job training on a set schedule. You earn a salary from day one. In Ireland, apprenticeships range from two to four years and lead to qualifications from NFQ Level 6 (Advanced Certificate) up to Level 8 (Honours Degree). A PLC (Post Leaving Certificate) course is a full-time, one-year programme at a Further Education college that leads to a QQI Level 5 or 6 qualification. PLCs are an excellent stepping stone — they let you apply to CAO degree programmes through the Higher Education Links Scheme, often with lower entry requirements than the Leaving Certificate route. Both are legitimate, respected pathways. The choice depends on whether you prefer to earn while you learn (apprenticeship) or spend a focused year building academic foundations before applying to college (PLC).

Yes. Through the QQI Higher Education Links Scheme, PLC graduates with strong results (typically five or more distinctions) can secure places at UCD, Trinity, DCU, Maynooth, and all Technological Universities. Many students who enter via PLC routes go on to achieve first-class honours in their degrees. The key is choosing a PLC with direct CAO links to your target programme and aiming for distinctions in all modules. Some institutions, like DCU, have a dedicated FE Specialist officer to support PLC applicants.

Springboard+ is a government-funded initiative offering free or heavily subsidised higher education courses in areas of identified skills need, including technology, data analytics, cybersecurity, sustainability, and digital marketing. Courses range from certificates (NFQ Level 6) to master's degrees (NFQ Level 9) and are delivered part-time to accommodate people who are working. Most courses are open to anyone in employment, self-employment, or returning to work. It is an excellent option for career changers or anyone wanting to upskill into one of the emerging fields on this page without committing to a full-time degree.

Not necessarily. The FIT Tech Apprenticeships in Software Development, Cybersecurity, and Computer Networking lead to NFQ Level 6 qualifications and are accepted by employers including Google, Deloitte, Vodafone, and the Irish public sector. You earn while you learn over two years. The UL Cybersecurity Practitioner apprenticeship goes further, delivering a full Level 8 degree while you work. Industry certifications from AWS, Microsoft, CompTIA, and Cisco also carry significant weight. Employers in Ireland are increasingly adopting skills-based hiring, meaning what you can demonstrate matters as much as — and sometimes more than — the qualification on paper.

As an EU citizen, you have the right to study in any EU member state, often at significantly reduced or zero tuition fees. Many European universities offer English-taught programmes and accept Leaving Certificate results directly. Countries like the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, and Finland are popular with Irish students. Erasmus Mundus programmes offer EU-funded scholarships of up to €1,400 per month. Germany's public universities charge minimal fees even for international students, making them exceptionally good value for engineering, computer science, and data science programmes.

Holland Codes (RIASEC) classify careers and personalities into six types: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional. Each card shows the codes that best match the role. Take the MyCareerVerse Career DNA quiz to discover your own profile, then use it to find careers and courses that align with your natural interests and strengths.

These careers have been selected precisely because they require capabilities AI augments rather than replaces: complex problem-solving, creative design, interpersonal judgement, physical-world engineering, and ethical decision-making. Research from the WEF and IMF shows that occupations combining technical skill with human insight are growing, not shrinking. The key is developing skills that work alongside AI rather than compete with it.
